Urgent appeal to find a kidney donor for 12-year-old boy in care

You may be aware that looking after children in care is a huge part of what we do as a council.

We’re issuing an urgent plea to find a kidney donor who could help transform the life of a 12-year-old boy in our care.

Jack, which is not his real name, has been in our care since 2022. He was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure when he was just 10 months old and has been on the transplant waiting list since 2019, but so far no donor has been found.

Sadly, due to complications in recent weeks, Jack is now on his last treatment option which puts his future at real risk unless a kidney is found.

A public appeal of this kind is a first for us as a council but, because he is a child in our care, we are determined to do all we can to help him find a donor and we’re urging people in Leeds and beyond, to come forward and see if they can help.

Potential donors must meet certain criteria to be eligible to donate: aged between 18 – 55, a UK resident, not having diabetes or receiving cancer treatment, and having a body mass index of less than 30.

If you, or someone you know, think you’re able to help, please email leedskidneyappeal@nhs.net
